Although my wig making journey started in 2009, I have been blogging about wig making since 2011. Maybe you want to know why...
My hair started to fall out in 1999/2000, and after a few years I went on to develop a form of alopecia. This affected not only my confidence, but the way that other people treated me and/or perceived me. It is sometimes surprising to realise how much of a woman's identity and femininity is tied up in her hair. As a result, I ended up wearing hair in the form of synthetic and human hair wigs and I also tried hairpieces.
Having never been 100% happy with any of my wigs, I decided to combine my love of hair and making things, with my obsessive love of research. I set out on a journey to learn how to make wigs.
One of the things I quickly realized was that documenting the process would not only be useful to me, but also help others in their quest for information. There are many other people for whom the idea of making a wig or hair piece for themselves or others appeals, and I am lucky to have been able to interact with and learn from other people who have a similar love of wigs.
My original aim was always to make wigs that are comfortable, realistic and as near perfect for me as possible. As time has gone on, I have discovered that I am not just interested in making wigs due to hair loss reasons, but because I love the creativity, the challenge and the process of design and research. As such, I am hoping to increase my general skills so that I can encompass a world beyond wigs for hair loss.
I can relate to your story because I too loss all of my hair. My hair loss started as a result of a death in our family. I started wearing hair pieces. Then I started wearing wigs. NowI am looking for ways to find out how to make my own wigs.
